The Year 1 Production

The Little Red Hen

Last Tuesday Room 4 performed the play the Little Red Hen with the rest of the Year 1 team.

In the play Room 4 were noisy, sloppy, fat, pink pigs!

Zara -"We had a good time seeing our parents on the night of the play"
Bella - "We had fun dancing, singing and making piggy noises"

Eva - "My favourite bit about the Little Red Hen is when Katie and Zara stamped their feet and shouted "NO!" "

Scarlett "My favourite part was when the cats explained that the Little Red Hen had to do it "All, by herself."
Leroy - "I hope everyone enjoyed our play"

More Marvellous Maths

Here is our maths problem for today.

We had to think about the important parts of the problem - 5 bears, 3 buttons.  Then we had to decide how we would show our working out.  Some people drew the bears and buttons and some people used bears and counters.

Working collaboratively to help solve the problem.

Using equipment to solve the problem.

How did you solve it and what answer did you get?

Some people had an extra challenge.

Can you solve the problem now?

Jessica and Zara counted out 24 beans for the buttons.

They then worked together to make groups of 3.

It was a good challenge.

Can you think of a different problem using bears and buttons?

Maths Problem Solving

Today at maths we tried to solve this problem ...

We could work by ourselves, in pairs or in groups.  We had to think about the main ideas in the problem.  Some people had to think about counting the right number of people.  Some people had to think about how to make the pattern.

We had to think about the best way to solve the problem.  Should we draw it?  Should we make it with equipment? Or was there another way to solve the problem.

Can you solve the problem?

Look at the way we worked to try to solve the problem - we did so much maths and it was fun.  We wonder what the problem will be tomorrow?

Making the pattern with cubes.

Drawing the shirts.

Making the pattern with teddies.

Using cubes to make the pattern.

Counting how many t.shirts there were.

Making the pattern and solving the problem.

Counting together.

Learning together.

Making the pattern with cubes.

Soccer Skills

Today we tried out some soccer skills with Football Kids NZ.  We were lucky it was in the morning when the sun wasn't too hot because we had to run, kick and chase the ball.  It was exhausting but fun.Look at us concentrating and having a great time.  Thanks Football Kids.

Discovery Time

Today the Kowhai Team had their first Discovery Time.

This time gives children opportunities to ...

  • Share and take turns
  • Solve problems
  • Show initiative and think for themselves
  • Help each other and work cooperatively
  • Be creative and think outside the square
  • Take risks and try out new ideas

Look at us at work.

Maybe we can smash it on the concrete.
It's solid.
Does it float or sink?
I'm being a creative learner.
How many can I pick up?
We're pretending to have tea.
It's chewy because of the wax.
It's messy.
We just tasted honey.
I've made a house with pencils.
I don't know how many I've got. I'll count them.
Now I know how many.

We are trying to make the bee keepers special hat.

We can't wait until next the Discovery Day.

Maths time

Today we were learning to play roll the dice. It is a good game to play at home too and practice our adding.
